One Line Brief
"We should create Motion Design Trading Cards! Imagine a full deck featuring motion designers in the industry and their work. Perhaps the cards are activated with augmented reality?"
Research
EJ Hassenfratz:
Founder of Eyedesgyn and is known for their 3d character design.

Hannah Segraves:
Ringling college of Art and Design, Motion Design alumni.

Jonathan Winbush:
Multi-award winning motion graphics artist

I chose all these artists because they inspired me to keep moving forward with motion design, so I felt the most comfortable portraying them.
The Objective
My goal for this project is to create 3 illustrated cards and have one card that activates with AR.
Design Pass 1:
ILLUSTRATED PORTRAITS
My goal was to make reference to Pokémon card. Focusing of delivering a beautiful portrait and paying homage to the artist's work. Picking people every motion design should know like Hayao Miyazaki.
However, my art director noted, “it feels too traditional and too illustrative, how can we make this more motion design”. I agreed with this and decided to look for more current motion designers
Exploration
To make the card feel more motion design, I put more emphasis on the type, movement and energy of the piece.
STUDIES & STYLIZATION
I spent time exploring more design and illustration styles. Focusing more on stylizing my subject, EJ, and representing their spirit rather than a realistic portrait.
The biggest challenge was to figure out how much stylization is okay, especially when it came to the color palette.
I asked myself constantly, is this too stylized? Is it okay to fake a skin color for the sake of style? Would this same stylization scheme work for other people?
First Pass Animation and Styleframe
INITIAL DESIGN & ANIMATION
Hand-drawn animation is my specialty so to show that of in the AR animation was important. I also kept in my a note my art direct gave me, “how does movement tell the story”.
Through my exploration I came up with this design for the front of the card. I incorporated some 3d elements to pay homage to EJ’s specialty, but I also made sure to put my own spin on this piece, with the illustration.
Second Pass
MORE 3D, MORE ANIMATION
I followed an EJ tutorial on Nomad Sculpt, and sculpted Lucky Pug in my own style.
I rethought the card design, focusing more on explaining EJ’s superpower, “creating cute characters.
With this new design direction, I was able to make an animation that was more energetic and lively.
